Mobile Library

A mobile library project was launched by UNICEF and partners in 2015 to deliver books to children in remote and impoverished areas of northern Thailand through vans supplied with more than 1,200 children’s books. The mobile library’s interior is shelved with books, and a driver and trained communications officer lead reading activities. Today, there are seven mobile libraries running through 51 schools to help reach 2,500 young children and 5,000 parents.

Hill Tribe Schools

Hill tribe schools, which help make educational dreams come true for children from ethnic minority groups. Hill tribe schools were established by the Ministry of Education with the support of UNICEF to provide primary school education for children of ethnic minority groups living in remote areas. The primary goal is to build a good foundation for a brighter future for every child, while respecting and preserving their heritage. To date, there are more than 472 primary students studying in 17 hill tribe schools with more than 41 teachers.

Multilingual Education Programme

In Thailand, children who do not speak Thai as their mother tongue face challenges in learning and will often require multi-language support in the classroom. UNICEF launched the Patani Malay-Thai Multilingual Education programme to help close the inequality gap for children whose mother tongue is not Thai and to improve the quality of education for students in Thailand.

Magic Box ‘brings joy and learning for young children’

With prolonged closures of early childhood development (ECD) centres in high-risk areas of Samut Sakorn Province due to the COVID-19 pandemic, UNICEF has started distributing Magic Boxes containing books, toys and learning materials as well as parental guidelines to help keep young children engaged in learning activities at home. A total of 1,000 sets of ‘Magic Box’ are being delivered to families with young children under 6 years old in Thai and migrant communities in areas of Samut Sakorn Province severely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.
