Earthquake emergency
A devastating earthquake has struck Myanmar, causing immense destruction.
More than 1,700 people - children included, have lost their lives, and over 3,400 have been injured. Families have been displaced, homes reduced to rubble, and entire communities left in crisis. The death toll is expected to rise as search and rescue efforts continue. Cities like Sagaing, Nay Pyi Daw, and Mandalay, home to hundreds of thousands of children, have suffered severe damage.
Here in Thailand, we have also felt the impact of this disaster.
UNICEF Thailand has been closely monitoring the situation, coordinating with partners, and standing ready to support national and local authorities in responding to the needs of affected children and families.
Within hours, UNICEF provided guidance to help parents talk to their children about the earthquake and support them through the trauma. This guidance was shared widely through UNICEF’s social media platforms and partner networks, including Early Moments Matter on Mobile.
While Thailand has experienced tremors and local disruptions, the devastation in Myanmar is far greater. Children and families there are in desperate need of food, clean water, shelter, and medical care.
